Positive Behaviour and Handling Training
Our Positive Behaviour Handling is very well received by mainstream schools, and we offer two courses which range from de-escalation techniques to actual physical interventions
1. Positive Behaviour Support Training (3 Hour)
This 3-hour course can be used by all staff. The aim is to discuss verbal and non-verbal methods of de-escalating emotionally aroused situations as well as ways to manage challenging behaviour. There are plenty of opportunities to discuss and plan how to deal with those students who are consistently become challenging at school. We also briefly cover how to safely extricate oneself or another pupil from bites, headlocks or neck holds, punching and kicking, arm or body holds.
This class can be taught to a large number of staff in one go (maximum 25) and it is ideal for a twilight session or inset day training. 2-year certificates are issued after successful completion.
2. Positive Behaviour Handling Training (6 Hour)
This course combines the PBS 3-hour syllabus as well as a more in-depth practice of the physical interventions including extractions (biting, pinching, kicking), escorts (both for 1 person and 2 person) and some minimal force holds. All the techniques shown are in line with current DfE guidance and can be used in mainstream schooling. We also briefly look at the legislative angle. This course is best for those staff members who would are directly and consistently interacting with challenging students.
This class is best for a minimum of 4 delegates and a maximum of 16 delegates. 2-year certificates are issued after successful completion.
However, in our experience, all Positive Behaviour Handling has been developed to be used on adults and large adolescents – it was originally for safe handling in mental health and correctional facilities.
What this means is that the physical elements can be adopted for assisting your larger pupils, however we find that positively handling early years and KS1 children we will need to really adapt the manoeuvres to suit.
